The holiday of your dreams

No wedding is complete without a honeymoon, and with all the trouble and stress you go to in organising such a mammoth event, the end game of jetting off on holiday for a fortnight is perfectly justified. Not least due to how surprisingly quick normal life seems to resume after a wedding.

So best get it right!

Budget and Destination

The honeymoon is traditionally the groom’s responsibility, so don’t disappoint!

So first off, decide what kind of romantic getaway you’re looking for, and then decide a budget. It's worth including not only flights and hotel but food, drink, activities, car hire, yacht mooring, champagne supplies, and so on.

Also, make sure you plan for the both of you rather than one or the other; are you heli-skiers, or pool side loungers? Maybe you need to reach a compromise but whatever you do, make sure it works for you both!

Book Time Off Work!

Assuming you're taking the full two week break, you should consider your employer and get those dates booked well in advance. If you leave it too late, you may find you've missed the boat. Not a good start.

In addition, some companies may have special leave for wedding and honeymoons, so make sure you check your contract carefully and take what you deserve!

Call the Experts

With all of this extra time off, you need to make sure you use it right, and whether that be another hitch hiking backpackers trip to India, or a fortnight in the Emirates Palace in Dubai with 1st class flights, you should consider your options carefully. In either case, a travel agent can really take the pressure off. You can even consider operators who specialise in weddings and honeymoons, particularly if you’re venturing to more obscure locations such as the Arctic Circle or a safari in South Africa.

These sort of romantic but extreme locations are testing at the best of times, and it’s best to put yourselves in the hands of the experts who can easily and seamlessly arrange excursions to more remote and unique locations, leaving you to concentrate on the rest.

We all love a surprise!

The devil is in the detail! So why not call ahead to have the hotel arrange chilled champagne and room service waiting for you on arrival? Or, better still, upgrade your room type without her knowing.

If you've got the cash and fancy giving your bride a wee surprise, and especially for long haul, take your flight from standard to first class . There’s nothing like turning up at the airport expecting to sit in a cramped seat for 10 hours only to be greeted by champagne and a private reclining armchair.

Sadly though, not all of us are made of money, and if the airline don't shock you with a free upgrade, then it could be the smaller things that make the real difference...maybe download a selection of her favourite films onto her iPad for her to watch throughout the flight. Perhaps create a couple of different playlists of her favourite music to help things along.

Timing

You don't need to adhere to the pressure of tradition and leave on the wedding night, although that doesn't mean you can't drive off with the tin cans dangling off the boot of your ride.

Why not enjoy the wedding reception, and soak up a couple of days of post-wedding buzz before you jet off into the sunset? If the week has been a little tight on the purse strings, why not wait until later in the year and save up some money for a really special blow-out? This also extends the wedding excitement for a few extra months. Booking in advance usually gets you a good deal, so don’t be afraid to plan ahead and snap up a bargain. It’s also much less stressful if you plan ahead rather than leaving everything to the last minute.

Chin up!

Finally, keep an upbeat attitude. All the planning in the world can’t account for little hiccups and those inevitable things that will always go wrong. From windy romantic candlelit dinners on the beach that you’ve been planning for months to a showery city break where you forget your umbrella - these things happen. And the best thing you can do is laugh it off - your attitude has the power to let these bumps in the road ruin or make the trip.

Remember, it’s not always about the fabulous destination and indulgent luxury, it’s about the memories you make together!
