Exploring a city can be thirsty work, but what if there was a way to take in the city sights, enjoy a nice cold beer and work off the calories from that said beer? Well, now you can. Beer bikes are essentially a bar on wheels. You sit around a bar table and pedal, with a sober driver at the front keeping you on the straight and narrow. So where can you do this?
While Amsterdam may have banned these party bikes and labelled them a ‘terrible phenomenon’, don’t let that stop you. There are plenty of awesome European cities where you can drink and ride to your heart’s content. Here, we’ve listed some of the best for you.
It’s worth mentioning that a lot of companies will insist you’re sober before you start the tour and different countries may limit the amount you can drink onboard - safety first, after all. It’s a great way to start your night, but don’t expect to get completely wasted, you can save that until later!
Budapest
All-aboard for a boozy guided tour of buzzing Budapest. Pour yourself a pint, load up a feel-good playlist of your favourite tunes and get comfortable, it’s going to be a fun couple of hours. See fantastic views from the iconic statues in Heroes Square to the impressive Vajdahunyad Castle. It’s the perfect way to experience Budapest’s renowned friendly party atmosphere and soak up the sun.
Prague
This brilliant guided tour is sure to be one of the highlights of your trip and the most fun you’ll have on a bike. You’ll get to see, up close, Prague’s stunning architecture and lively atmosphere, with plenty of people enjoying a drink outside in the sun. Have your fill of beer from the onboard tap and relax, laugh and drink your way around the city.
Barcelona
If you’re taking a break from the beach and looking to explore the city sights, you won’t be disappointed. Barcelona is a beautiful city, and a beer bike is one of the best ways to truly experience it. Drink beer or sangria (obviously) with your mates as you ride from the comfort of your own pub on wheels, getting you in the party mood for a great night out in the Spanish party capital.
Berlin
You’d better get cycling if you want to explore all the sights and sounds that Germany’s capital has to offer. See historical landmarks like remnants of the Berlin Wall and learn more about this famous city as you pedal down its streets, pouring ice-cold beer as you go. Put on some tunes and experience the city for what it has become: a thriving cosmopolitan destination.
London
See London through new (and slightly tipsy) eyes. It’s BYOB for beer and wine, so choose your favourites, play your own music and set off along one of the different routes around the city. Pedal over the Thames via London Bridge while looking up at the Shard, explore Borough Market or experience Shoreditch in an unforgettably fun bike tour.
Riga
For the best views of Riga, hop on a party bike and start pedalling as your driver guides you through this beautiful city. Blending timeless tradition with art nouveau style, it’s a city with character. It might get chilly in the winter months, but you’ll have plenty of beer to warm you up.
Belfast
Bring your friends together for a memorable tour with great craic. Choose from the city centre, the Cathedral Quarter or the Titanic Quarter for a chance to experience the heart and soul of the city. Pick up a few bottles of Guinness or order a keg of your favourite drink - it doesn’t have to be a beer bike, so why not make it a cider or prosecco bike? No one will judge you, well, maybe they will.
Lisbon
For warm weather all year long, Lisbon is a top European city break and a great place to grab a glass of sangria, so why not combine sightseeing and drinking? Choose from sangria or beer and start drinking and burning those calories at the same time. You’ll visit all the right places, putting you in the perfect mood for a night out in The Bairro Alto.
Hamburg
Explore Hamburg’s maritime history and culture without ever leaving the pub, or more accurately, riding around on the pub. Work together and you’ll be on the move in no time seeing sights like the Alster Lakes and the impressive Speicherstadt district. It’s a city with plenty of authentic pubs and local German beers, making it the perfect place to embrace a good beer.
If all these amazing beer-loving cities have left you feeling thirsty, why not combine a beer bike with more fun and boozy activities like beer tasting, a cocktail masterclass or even a boat party.
