Stags make a beeline for theTemple of Venus (aka Amsterdam’s Sex Museum):the world’s first and oldest collection of erotica, where you’ll learn how people got it on across the ages, before hitting up the neon lights of the notoriousRed Light District. TheAnne Frank Houseis a must-do, providing a sobering look at the atrocities of WWII. And when all is said and done, you can’t go wrong with cycling or cruising alongAmsterdam’s canals.

Food

Head to theRembrandtpleinfor Amsterdam’s trendiest restaurants, while theJordaanandDe Pjipare a must-visit for popping street stalls. Indonesian food has a huge presence in The Netherlands, with loaded takeaway boxes ofrendang curry, rice and satayall yours for around €5. If you can stomach it,herringis a popular hangover cure: served raw with onions in little booths along the harbour.

For something a little closer to home, fried salt codmakes a great lunch, served on that day’s newspaper.Oorlog french fries(aka ‘war chips’) are eaten from a cone, topped with mayonnaise, peanut sauce and raw onion - it’s unusual at first, but it gets addictive!

Amsterdam Booze

Amsterdam Booze

TheLeidsepleinis where the action is in Amsterdam, boasting everything from sports bars to strip clubs all within staggering distance. Partygoers must also head for theJordaan’sspeakeasies andWestpoort’swarehouse raves. You’ll be familiar with Dutch beer brands likeHeineken,AmstelandDuvel, but it’s worth drinking as the locals do with acraft beerin a tall fluitje glass.

For something much stronger, geneveris The Netherland’s most famous spirit: a powerful gin that will knock your socks off. To drink it, sip a tiny amount from the top before going at it at a steady pace (it’s not meant to be taken as a shot). Sometimes its served with beer to get your Amsterdam stag party started.

Amsterdam Neighbourhoods

Amsterdam is a modern city that retains a village-like atmosphere, in no small part thanks to its characterful neighbourhoods.

Centrum

Amsterdam-Centrum a tourist hotspot, marked by its iconic canal belt surrounded by historic Golden Age houses that pop with colour. Come here for most of the city’s biggest attractions like the 17th-century Royal Palace, or get lost in the craziness of Dam Square.

De Wallen (Red Light District)
De Wallen is much more than sex shops and peep shows. This neighbourhood dates back over 700 years, home to beautiful churches like the Oude Kerk alongside modern restaurants, video game arcades and creative studios. The government is keen to redevelop the area and refresh its debaucherous image - so expect big changes to come.

De Pjip
This former working-class enclave is now one of the trendiest parts of Amsterdam, home to the famous Albert Cyup Market and an increasing number of young people setting up hip brunch cafes. Come here for a taste of Amsterdam at its coolest.

Westerpark
Escape into the green, green arms of one of the biggest parks in Amsterdam and roam through an urban beach, Amsterdamse School architecture and the Molen de Otter - one of the city’s last remaining windmills.

Darcy Froud

Amsterdam Stag Expert: Darcy

I’ve loved every minute working at Chillisauce and have learned so much on the job. When not at work helping customers, I love spending my free time out with friends and attending events. I am also passionate about visiting new places and going on holiday!

Amsterdam has to be my favourite location that I’ve visited so far. It’s a truly versatile destination, accommodating for so many different types of people. It has so many unique qualities, such as the red-light district, coffee shops and loads of bars that are constantly buzzing all night! Not only does the city have great nightlife, but it is gorgeous in daylight with its iconic canals. A perfect package!

Darcy's Amsterdam hot picks
Amsterdam

Amsterdam's Laws

Cannabis:Cannabis in all its forms is tolerated in Amsterdam - not legal. You can consume til your heart’s content inside coffeeshops, but you’re limited to possession of 5 grams per person outside. Smoking weed in public is tolerated, but it’s best to do so in private or certain bar terraces to be on the safe side (and to be polite). For more information on all things green, the Coffeeshop Info Centre is a great resource.

Red Light District:Prostitution has been legal in Amsterdam since 2000, with sex workers paying taxes and enjoying the same labour rights as every other profession. Do not, under any circumstances, take photos of the Red Light District window displays - businesses will likely confiscate your camera and give you an earful.

Magic truffles (a close cousin to shrooms), peyote and ayahuasca can be bought legally from ‘smart shops’.

Avoid:Smoking tobacco inside bars (with the exception of cannabis in coffee shops). Hard drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, LSD and heroin are forbidden in The Netherlands.
